5My third Roll-N-Lock - Better than Ever!
By Sawman
This is my third Roll-N-Lock. Since these things are not cheap and I am not rich, this being my third one should tell all that needs to be said about whether or not it's a worthwhile investment. I carry some tools in my truck. I must have security. I also must have the ability to carry oversized loads, i.e. tall stuff. Roll-n-Lock provides for all those requirements.

It's tough. The roll-top slats are aluminum with a vinyl covering, very much like a roll top desk, and disappears into a steel box behind the truck's back window. You could stand on the thing, but I weigh over 200 lbs so I let my wife stand on it to get over a wall once. The roll top box is steel, has a hinged lid so you can clean inside it, and has a tough, powder coat black finish. The side rails that the slats slide in are extruded aluminum that attach to the pickup truck via provided clamps. Overall, the thing is durable, easy on the eyes, and was pretty simple to install.

What about that steel receiver box taking up space? It does. It hangs on the rails of the pickup bed and mine takes away 10 inches of hauling space, but since it is only 8 inches deep, it leaves me 10 inches of height under it (my bed box is 18 inches deep) unencumbered for full length lumber, etc.

Installation. I bought my first Roll-N-Lock installed, but after looking at it, I knew I could do it. Sure enough when I changed trucks I self-installed the second one. Now I have bought a Nissan Frontier, and installation was as easy as ever. And they have, each time, made improvements that make the Roll-N-Lock just that much better. Installation on the Nissan Frontier took me four hours, but that was with my goofing off part of the time, so I really think 2-3 man hours is what it should take. I did this one alone.

Longevity. I cannot speak for the latest one, but I had the first one for six years before changing trucks. At the end it looked like new, and it had, for two of the six years, been in constant, Texas sun. I used 303 Aerospace Protectant on the vinyl material covering the aluminum, roll-top slats, and the combination was golden. The second Roll-N-Lock fared equally well. I had it four years.

By the way, I also bought one of those bed rugs for the latest truck and installed it first. It literally took me longer to install the Bed Rug than the Roll-N-Lock.

So, if you need a tonneau that gives you security AND the ability to haul tall stuff, this is it. Happy hunting.
